Now in its third year, Transport for London are to fund cycling promotion events as part of the Community Cycling Fund for London programme. The events are open to all London boroughs and the focus this year is on 16+ students at universities, sixth form and FE colleges, where the institution wishes to raise awareness of cycling as a viable means of transport to staff and students.
The objectives of the events which are delivered by LCC are:
•to encourage more students to cycle more
•to increase confidence of students cycling
•to help the institution create a cycle-friendly environment
The events offer the chance to try out a variety of bikes and for those who already have their own – bike health checks and bike maintenance training sessions are available to help get old bikes back into shape.
As many of us know, something as simple as a puncture or slipping gears can be the difference between choosing to cycle or leaving the bike in the shed.
When people drive or get the bus, they get used to navigating by main roads which seem scary to cycle on. Route planning and guided rides help people identify quiet cycle-friendly routes to work, to the shops or to restaurants and cinemas. Those who’ve been off the bike for a while or are new to London find cycle training refreshes their ‘urban’ cycling skills and boosts their confidence.
The team is on hand to answer any cycling-related questions and attendees are provided with details of their local bike shops, their borough cycling officer contact details, further confidence training, info about led rides in their area and other tips.
All London boroughs are invited to bid for the events to build on their existing cycling strategies. These events should be used to complement existing cycle programmes and strategies within the borough with the aim of extending the reach of cycling to new audiences and encouraging occasional cyclist to cycle more.
Applications for events in 2013/2014 have now closed.
These events are funded by Transport for London (TfL) with some match funding from the Active Travel Consortium/ Big Lottery.
