Bike experts social enterprise receive business award at 10 Downing Street
Angela Smith, Minister for the Third Sector, at Bikeworks
Bikeworks, an East London bike specialist, won this year’s Best New Social Enterprise award for England.
On Wednesday 19th November, Gordon Brown presented the award to the Bikeworks crew at Downing Street.
Trading since 2007, Bikeworks’ business model proved a success and the brand including its services has been expanding quickly into a true community cycling hub. Today they work in partnership with four of the Olympic boroughs in East London, with Primary Care Trusts, and a number of homeless charities.
Dave Miller, co-founder of Bikeworks said,
‘We have achieved a lot in our short history and we believe this award can help Bikeworks move onto the next stage and support plans to scale up and replicate our successful community cycling hub model in other areas so that many more people can benefit from our cycling initiatives. ’
Minister for the third sector Angela Smith visited Bikeworks and commented:
‘They are doing a fantastic job and making a real difference to people in East London, I am really pleased that their hard work is being recognised with a Social Enterprise Award. The Government is keen to ensure that social enterprises have the flexibility to operate in the way that works best for them. So I am particularly pleased to see that this is working for Bikeworks, and enabling Jim and Dave [founders of Bikeworks] to develop their business.’
