Transport for London could soon be building an 84-bike Cycle Hire docking station on top of Southwark tube station.
According to reports on the SE1 website, TfL has applied for planning permission to install a docking station with over 80 bikes on the vacant area above the Southwark underground's ticket hall.
Plans for a large hotel or office development in this space appear to be on hold indefinitely.
The docking station would be the first not at street level, and ramps or stairs suitable for bicycles would need to be provided.
The docking station is likely to prove popular with Transport for London's head office directly across the road in the Palestra office.
At its launch the Cycle Hire scheme had less than the projected 6000 bicycles installed due to several docking stations being refused planning permission.
The Southwark tube expansion is one of several in central London, as well as a major expansion into East London also due to take place.
