Physical activity is one of the key determinants of good health, and cycling can help protect against heart disease, strokes, diabetes and certain types of cancer. Cyclists are healthier than the average motorist and can expect to live longer.
Even a small amount of cycling can lead to significant health benefits, including better cardio-vascular fitness, improved balance and co-ordination, reduced stress and greater psychological well-being.
Cyclists and pedestrians also absorb lower levels of pollutants from traffic fumes than other road users.
As for the dangers of road traffic, doctors and government health experts have concluded that the benefits of cycling outweigh the risk of injury.
