Donating a bike
Things to do with that old bike...
If you have an old bike that you don't use anymore, how about recycling it?
Bikeworks is a social enterprise in Tower Hamlets, East London, that offers a range of organisational and public cycle services including cycle training, repairs and sales.
It recycles & refurbishes used and abandoned bikes so that they can be reused, or when this isn't possible materials (steel, aluminium) are put into the recycling system.
Refurbished bikes are used in Bikeworks community programmes, given away to community groups, and some sold on at affordable prices to the community.
If you have a bike which you would like to donate to Bikeworks or are interested in buying a second hand bike, please contact them on 020 8980 7998.
Cloud 9 Cycles
Cloud 9 cycles in Camden is a newly opened bike shop that stocks everything from new bikes to bikes available for hire. Alongside the bespoke bike builds, Cloud 9 recondition old bikes so you can pick up a pre-loved bike for a decent price.
The workshop accepts donated bikes and those that are not suitable for reconditioning are given to the Charity Re-cycle that ships bikes to Africa.
You can see what bikes are available to buy via the Cloud 9 Cycles website or call them on 0203 20 50 190
Freecycle is an email based messageboard where you can list items you don’t want anymore, or claim items that other people are giving away, entirely for free. Bikes come up quite often but are always in demand – so you’ve got to be quick!
Parkes Cycling restores bicycles donated by Islington Council's bicycle recycling scheme.
Working in conjunction with highways agencies and local authorities, Parkes Cycling have given several bicycles destined straight for the scrap metal bin a new lease of life, and some have already found happy, appreciative owners.
This project is fast becoming an invaluable resource for people who want to get into cycling as a mode of transport and exercise, affordably, and with the right advice and technical back-up, courtesy of Parkes Cycling mechanics.
If you would like to donate or buy a bike please contact Parkes Cycling:07958 738887 and email firstname.lastname@example.org
Re-cycle recycles old bikes and parts and ships them to Africa, where partners teach locals the skills to repair and maintain them to improve their lives in a sustainable manner.
Waltham Forest's Bike Recycling Scheme
Waltham Forest Council runs a very popular bike recycling scheme, where you can not only donate an old bike and get a new bike (for a donation), but you can also learn how to work on your own bike with the assistance of a bike mechanic, or take part in a maintenance workshop with the Waltham Forest LCC group.
Wandsworth's Bike Reconditioning project
Wandsworth’s Youth Offending Team run a bike reconditioning project which works to recondition old bikes. These are then given to groups and individuals in the borough who are keen to start cycling. If you have a bike to donate, visit Wandsworth Cycling Campaign’s website where the details you need are in the ‘Services for Local Cyclists’.
