Intelligent lorry design can make London streets safer for cycling

LCC has published an article in London Cyclist magazine listing measures that can improve lorry/HGV design to make cycling safer in London and urban areas (download the article).

The article shows an existing lorry (one of the safer designs currently on the street), and explains how it could be vastly improved to pose less of a threat to vulnerable road users.

HGV campaigner and former lorry driver Charlie Lloyd said, "It’s high time that urban lorries were designed in such a way that the reduction of the danger they pose to the vulnerable was made a priority."

This is important. But ideally cyclists should be segregated from HGV traffic at all major junctions.

Agreed - but there are a lot of minor roads/junctions where this would make a difference. I would like to see the Health and Safety executive brought in. Any company operating machinery in a public road should be liable to prosecution if it is not as safe as possible.
