Record numbers of cyclists have been recorded in Islington and Hackney, according to a new cycle count at the Colebrooke Row/City Road crossing.
On a sunny morning in July, 1261 cyclists passed the junction (in all directions) in an hour, making the crossing second only to Hyde Park Corner in terms of cyclist volumes.
The count shows an increase of more than 25% over a similar count in September 2009 when there were roadworks at the junction.
The crossing, recently refurbished by Transport for London, provides a traffic light route from Hackney and Islington to the City and West End.
Islington Cyclists Action Group (the local LCC group) lobbied to install the crossing decades ago and recently campaigned to have it improved.
