Lambeth Council's Sustainable Transport team is organising a series of events giving cyclists the chance to chance to sit in the cab of a lorry.
So far, events have been
scheduled to take place in Waterloo, Clapham, Brixton and Streatham in
May, June, July and September 2010 (see map above), from 5.30-7.30pm.
Venue / date June July September Waterloo, SE1 8WA 1 6 7 Clapham, SW4 0P 8 13 14 Brixton, SE24 0PA 15 20 21 Streatham, SW16 3BT 22 27 28
The events are
designed to educate cyclists as to the dangers of riding close to large
vehicles that often have limited visibility.
Eric Duvall of Lambeth Council said, "At each event there'll be an HGV, a Dr Bike event, along with cycle trainers from CTUK
"Veolia and Conways are kindly supplying the vehicles and drivers for free."
Lambeth leads the way in driver training
The Borough of
Lambeth has distinguished itself as being the first borough to provide
training whereby lorry drivers get to experience being a cyclist.
LCC is lobbying for such lorry-driver training to form a central part of the capital's strategy to reduce road danger for cyclists.
