Lewisham & Greenwich Young Cyclists

Tom Crispin

Lewisham and Greenwich Young Cyclists was formed by primary school teacher, Tom Crispin (pictured above), in July 2008.

Tom has been teaching kids in schools for a long time, and has a phenomenal record: 90-100% participation was normal when he was teaching Bikeability, before funding was cut in favour of cheaper, but less-effective methods.

Lewisham & Greenwich Young Cyclists currently organises rides with distances up to 40 miles, mostly along cycle paths and quiet roads. Sometimes a train is used for the return trip.

Membership for the club is just £5 per year, and rides generally cost an additional £2 each, all of which goes back into the club.

Advance notice is required for young people joining a ride so a sufficient number of adults can accompany the group (at least one for every six young people).

The club has a number of excellent bikes for young people to borrow free of charge, though club members are expected to give some of their time each year helping to clean and maintain the pool bikes.
