The London Cycling Campaign’s Cycling Projects team has joined forces with NHS Greenwich and On Your Bike to provide inexpensive loan bikes to residents in an effort to improve public health, reduce congestion and save people money.
Although the scheme only started in August 2012, 80 people have already registered an interest, and 30 bikes have been loaned to Greenwich residents for commuting and leisure at a cost of just £10 for a month’s loan (including one year's LCC membership).
Most residents say they’re using the bikes more than three times per week, for journeys between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
One resident who’s hired a bike said, “Cycling is much quicker than driving during rush hour, and cycling to Greenwich to watch the torch relay was a definite highlight.”
All participants receive Bikeability cycle training, information on cycle security and safety, and at the end of the programme have the option to buy the bike at a discounted rate.
Greenwich Council’s cabinet member for a Greener Greenwich Harry Singh (pictured, centre) said, “This is an excellent scheme and I hope many residents take it up. I’m sure the inspiration of the Olympics is still in everyone’s mind.”
LCC Cycling Projects’ Chris Jubb said, “We’re delighted to be part of this healthy cycling scheme, which has been tremendously popular with residents so far, showing people a healthier lifestyle can be fun, cheap and convenient.
“Now that local councils are being given increased responsibility for improving public health we hope to roll out more productive partnerships of this type.”
