A school bike club in Newham, a community celebration of cycling in Tower Hamlets, a simple and sensible bike track in Southwark and a radio bike show took top honours in this year’s London Cycling Awards.
Emily Thornberry, MP for Islington South and chair of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group, presented the awards at the London Cycling Campaign’s AGM.
Ms. Thornberry welcomed the involvement of children in cycling in particular and said she would be working in Parliament to help improve provision for cycle users.
The chair of the judges, Clare Neely said ‘ The standard of entries this year was outstanding reflecting a booming interest in cycling in the capital and some exceptional work by volunteers, organisations, schools and local authorities in London.’
Best Cycling Initiative for Young People or Children : Liz Bowgett and the New City Primary School in Newham
Liz Bowgett, a teacher at New City Primary School in Plaistow, initiated cycle training, a well attended after school club and access to bikes for children of all abilities at her school. This means that children now drag their parents out on cycle rides, as well as cycling to school with them. For those who live in homes where there is no room to store a cycle, the school provides secure cycle storage, installed with a grant from Transport for London, which is used both after school and at weekends.
Best Community Cycling Initiative: Ashraf Ali and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets for the Tower Hamlets Community Event
The Tower Hamlets Community Event involved local community youth centres, local residents, businesses and schools in a day of cycle training, games and cycle maintenance in an area of traditionally low cycle use. ‘It was wonderful,’ according to an LCC member who was involved on the day, ‘to see adults and children encouraged to give cycling a go for perhaps the first time’.
Best Cycle Facility: London Borough of Southwark and Southwark Cyclists for the Greendale Link
The Greendale Link in Southwark is a modest, direct, and well designed cycle route which links people to their schools, shops and local amenities. It is already increasing local cycling and cycle awareness. Groundwork did the design and implementation with additional support from Dulwich Community Council and Camberwell Community Council.
Best Cycling Media Initiative: Jack Thurston and The Bike Show on Resonance 104.4 FM
‘The UK’s only radio show devoted to the miracle of the bicycle and the transcendental pleasures of cycling’. One devoted listener writes: ‘The Bike show is a very welcome addition to London’s cycle culture that has a loyal following and does its own quirky bit to get people on bikes’.
