London's long-awaited Cycle Hire Scheme is set to open on Friday 30 July 2010, with cyclists eagerly antipating the 6000 extra bikes, designed for short trips around Zone 1.
Initially, only those who've registered for daily, weekly or yearly membership (visit the TfL website from Friday 23 July) will be eligible to use the bikes on the official launch date, 30 July.
The rest of the public will gain access several weeks later, by which time it's expected the number of docking stations will be nearer the 400 predicted.
Planning permission and installation delays mean only around 300 are likely to be in place at launch.
In surveys, Parisians say that they use their cars less because of their Velib scheme, while other, non-Velib cycle trips and bike purchases have also risen.
