The Sheffield stand is an inverted U-shaped metal bar, which is inexpensive and easy to install. Because it supports the bike and enables people to lock the frame and one or both wheels to the stand it is often the preferred option.
Its simple but practical design has made it the most popular cycle parking device for local authorities, schools and work places. It also requires minimal maintenance. Other stands which conveniently secure the cycle frame and wheels are available, as are shelters for multiple stands, which are particularly popular in schools and work places. For further information and a list of suppliers see the LCC report "Cycle Parking Installation Standards".
