In 2007 London will host the opening stage of the Tour de France, the world's biggest annual sporting event and the biggest cycling event in the world, with a spectatorship of about 15 million people.
Raising the profile of cycling
LCC will be working to use the opportunity to publicise the benefits of cycling to a wider audience and make London a world class cycling city.
This will be the first time that the Tour has come to London and Ken Livingstone, London’s Mayor expects it to bring in substantial tourism revenue as well as boosting the image of cycling saying, “Hosting the first stage of the legendary French cycle race will raise the profile of cycling in the capital, attract visitors and promote the capital as a venue for international sporting events.”
Improving cycling facilities in the capital
Jenny Jones, the Mayor's Road Safety Ambassador and a Green Party member of the London Assembly , said, “Hosting the Grand Depart in London will be brilliant for cycling in this country and good news for tourism in London. There is a growing wave of enthusiasm for cycling in London and we have to ensure that the facilities for cyclists match the growing expectations. London has eighteen months before the Tour de France comes to London in which to build more of the London Cycling Network, to create secure cycle parking at our railway & tube stations and to make our roads safer to use. The Tour de France will raise the profile of cycling in London, but we want to turn those enthusiastic spectators into everyday cyclists. We are hoping that the mass participation bike ride which we are planning for later in 2007, will be the cycling equivalent of the London Marathon.”
In line with LCC's Active Spectator strategy, we will be organising led rides to a dedicated LCC space in Hyde Park to watch the Tour de France prologue.
The best way to stay in touch and support this campaign is to join LCC. As well as funding our work, members campaign with us locally and across the capital. Join us today. Together we can make London a world class cycling city.
