What are your New Year’s Resolutions? Get fit, feel healthier?

 Everyone knows cycling is a great way to get in shape, so here are our top ten tips to get you on your bike in 2007.

1. If you’re not already a member, join LCC!

Members get free third party insurance, London Cyclist magazine delivered to their doors four times a year and more. Not only that, but your membership will go towards improving facilities, promoting cycling and making London a world-class cycling city. 2. Get involved with your local group.

Have a look at our local groups pages for information on when your local group is next organising a ride or meeting, or check our rides and event section. It’s a fantastic way to meet new people, get out on your bike now and improve cycling facilities in your area.

 

3. If you’ve got kids, get them cycling for the New Year.

See our pages on cycling with children and cycle training for info on training for children. If they’re still on holidays, it could be a great way to stop them getting bored.

 

4. Sign up for a charity ride.

There’s information all over the place about rides coming up in the spring and summer, so now’s the perfect time get fit and support a good cause. It’s also a great time to have a holiday to look forward to.

 

5. Get your company cycle-friendly for the New Year.

If you think your workplace is lacking in cycling facilities, now’s a great time to do something about it. Tell your employer about Transport for London’s Take a Stand scheme and apply for some free cycle parking, request a Cycle to Work scheme, or nominate your company for LCC Corporate Affiliation – see links on the right for more information.

 

6. Go on a maintenance course or workshop.

7. Get a friend or colleague cycling.

Not only will they be impressed by your bike knowledge, you’ll have great fun and they’ll be eternally grateful when they realise how easy, speedy and cheap it is to get around town by bike.

 

8. Love your bike more.

January’s a time when your bike will need extra TLC, so have some cloths at the ready and get polishing. You’ll love it all the more when it’s shiny, and it'll be even more fun to ride if you pump up your tyres and oil that chain regularly.

 

9. Try out a new kind of bike.

Take a trip to London Recumbents and test-ride or hire a trike, tandem or trailer-bike. The best family biking this side of Amsterdam, according to Time Out.

 

And finally...

10. Learn to love cycling in the rain.

Wrap up in waterproofs and take on the weather – you might just find there’s nothing quite like the breeze in your hair on a wet windy night. Invest in some new lights at the same time - you’ll feel more confident, and now’s a great time to pick up a bargain in the sales.
