Resurfacing: backlog remains

Badly needed work recently carried out in Westminster has made little impression on the backlog of streets we have suggested for resurfacing, as the chart shows:

We are pleased to report that a number of roads we suggested have been resurfaced this year, namely:

  • Bentinck Street (extensive patching)
  • Bolsover Street
  • Gloucester Street
  • Great Marlborough Street + Noel Street (part only)
  • Star Street
  • Welbeck Street (south end)

Only five of the roads that we suggested to Westminster last year were actually resurfaced, namely:

  • Allsop Place NW1 - resurfaced by TfL
  • Elizabeth Street - near the coach station
  • John Islip Street - the Vauxhall Bridge Road end
  • Lupus Street
  • Marylebone Station forecourt

The following streets that we suggested for resurfacing last year still need doing:

  • Avenue Road NW8
  • Cumberland Street SW1
  • Eaton Square - SW corner leading to Eaton Place
  • Great Marlborough Street + Noel Street (only partly resurfaced)
  • Great Smith Street
  • Greycoat Place - near the fire station and the school
  • Haymarket
  • Lowndes Street - Lowndes Square end
  • Matthew Parker Street
  • Rathbone Place, especially at approach to Oxford Street
  • St John's Wood Road / Grove End Road / Lisson Grove junction
  • St Martin's Place (southbound)

Since then, a number of other streets have deteriorated and would benefit from resurfacing, namely:

  • Bayswater Road westbound from Lancaster Gate
  • Craven Road: Eastbourne Terrace to Westbourne Terrace
  • Matthew Parker Street
  • Oxford Street (east end)
  • Praed Street (near station)
  • Storey's Gate
  • Westbourne Grove, near Queensway

All these streets are unpleasant to cycle along, with very irregular surfaces usually resulting from a large number of openings and reinstatements or with the surface simply disintegrating.

Quite often holes can also appear in otherwise good surfaces. You should report these for action.

Bolsover Street W1W was resurfaced on 20 September 2013. It had given cyclists a boneshaking arrival to the Fitzrovia area, and we are pleased to see it fixed.

Please tell us if you know of any other streets from our 'rough roads' list that have been fixed, or have any 'rough roads' to be added.
