Ride tomorrow (Saturday 14 April)
Saturday 14th April - Bekesbourne Circular Ride - Including Richborough Roman Fort
Brought to you by Lewisham Cyclists:
Meeting Points: Catford Station by ticket machine (Not Catford Bridge) at 07:45 for the 08:03 to Bromley South - where we will change onto the 08:39 direct service to Bekesbourne. ETA at Bekesbourne is 10:03 and the ride starts and finishes there.
Bromley South Station Forecourt at 08:10 for the 08:39 direct service to Bekesbourne.
Today's 43 mile long ride takes us to rugged and deeply indented valleys that lie south of Canterbury and then onto a much flatter plain - almost all the hills being in the first half or so of the ride (around 600 metres of ascent). We will pass through such villages as Pett Bottom , Elham & Lydenn ... the whole route is on lanes... many of them narrow and little frequented by traffic ... plus you may be relieved to learn that there are no off road sections !
The early start is due to the reasonably lengthy train journey and the fact that we plan to visit Barfreston Church.... a small , but perfect ecclesiastical jewel ... and Richborough Roman Fort .. where the Romans first landed and one of the last places they held (entry to Fort £4.90) - allowing perhaps 20 -30 minutes at Barfreston and an hour or so at Richborough.
We'll be looking to find a pub for a lunch stop - perhaps the Griffin's Head in Chillenden ..... and - for those that want to have a drink or two after the day's ride is done - then we'll find another pub, near Bekesbourne.
