We will take the train to Harpenden from Blackfriars. This station is also on the line that goes through Catford, Crofton Park and Peckham Rye. It's a 37 minute train ride from Blackfriars..7 pounds with a groupsave for four, if we have enough, or 9 with railcards which we have). We will follow another route mapped out by Jack Thurston in his Lost Lanes book, his Chilterns Rendevouz. Only a half hour train ride and then we will be on our way into the Chilterns. So it's a hilly ride but the Chilterns are easier than our usual Kent Downs or Surrey Hills. Through pretty villages, crossing the Grand Canal to Ivinghoe Beacon. Some fine views, mostly quiet lanes, but a few short stretches of busier B roads. Then back through lanes and villages to Harpenden. 43 miles. 507 metres climbing. Mostly quiet lanes with a few short sections on busier roads. Medium to hard ride.
