Lea Valley & Essex Countryside
A ride of three parts, starting at Cutty Sark Gardens at 10am, and heading north through the foot tunnel. The first 27km / 17 miles is mainly on canal and river towpaths up the Lea Valley as far as Waltham Abbey (the abbey itself is worth a look).
The second part, a similar distance on minor roads and tracks through the rolling hills of Essex around Epping (but not actually through the wooded parts of Epping Forest). Lunch at a cafe just outside Epping.
For the third part, I propose avoiding a 20km ride back on busy roads and through built up areas by taking bikes on the Central Line train from Theydon Bois to Stratford provided we are not too large a group. Only £1.50 with an Oyster card. That leaves 10km ride back to Greenwich.
Total distance roughly 65km / 40 miles. Towpaths and tracks are still liable to be muddy in places so I would not advise slick tyres. The country lanes of Essex that look quiet from a map can be surprisingly busy, with drivers not always respecting cyclists. I would expect to be back in Greenwich by 4.30pm but bring lights in case, as well as spare tube etc. as usual. And waterproofs/gloves - the forecast for Saturday is cool and
