As a not for profit-organisation, Poplar HARCA (Housing and Regeneration Community Association) owns and manages around 8,500 homes in East London and provides affordable housing. With their CCFL funding they purchased 32 second-hand bicycles which were distributed to 5 of their main neighbourhood centres. Frequented by local residents, these centres provided the focus point of the project as it was a key place to engage people from a diversity of backgrounds in cycling activities.
“It was lovely to cycle with a group of people. A great way to spend time with friends and get fit at the same time.” Project participant
Cycle training, bike rides, bike maintenance sessions and free bike health checks supported 96 participants to get back on their bikes and cycle regularly.
“I’ll definitely bring my children and cycle with them next time now that I know I can do it again! I was so nervous in the beginning but the cycle instructor made me feel confident on a bike again.” Project participant
