London Cycling Campaign and its local groups have been leading rides since the earliest days of the organisation. We want to share skills and knowledge with the widest possible audience. Led rides are an excellent way to introduce newcomers to the pleasure of cycling as well as a powerful method of engagement.
Ride Leader Training imparts a set of skills that covers almost all types of led rides, from a little jaunt to the park with a small group, right up to large rides involving thousands of people.
The course is suitable for anyone, regardless of your previous level of experience, although participants should be competent riders. We strongly recommend that everyone who wishes to take this course, even those with years of experience, should also do a 1-2-1 cycle training session with a local instructor, to Bikeability Level 3. This is usually available free of charge from your local authority and will ensure that you have the necessary knowledge of lane positioning, which is so important if you want to lead fun and safe rides on road.
This 5 hour, day course is split about 50/50 between classroom and on road. It is delivered by expert ride leader trainers and you will get a certificate and a badge on completion of the course.
You will learn the skills necessary to:
Marshal a Ride
As part of a team of marshals you will be helping keep a ride together and providing any assistance that becomes necessary. You will also be helping to manage riders as they cross junctions.
Lead a Ride
As well as leading a ride on the day, the Ride Leader is responsible for the wider duties involved in setting up and running a ride. This includes route planning, dealing with the authorities and managing the roles of the Marshals.
