London Bike Kitchen - Best Community Project (London Cycling Awards 2013)

Just like you can find everything you need for cooking in a kitchen, you can find everything you need for mending your broken bike in the London Bike Kitchen (LBK). Inspired by the volunteer-led Bicycle Kitchen in Los Angeles, LBK gives new and seasoned cyclists the tools and equipment needed to fix their own bikes. Experienced and qualified mechanics are on site and able to help and answer any questions on the way.

In addition to the DIY bike workshop, LBK runs bike maintenance workshops for women, build-a-bike and wheel-building courses, promotes cycling around London and sets up pop-up bike maintenance stalls at markets, fairs and other community events. LBK is a social enterprise and offers services at affordable rates through an annual membership system or one off charges. By teaching bike maintenance skills and referring Hackney residents to the free cycle training offered by the local authorities, LBK hopes to give cyclists the skills to look after their own bike and the confidence to share these skills with others.

Jen Gwiazdowski, founder of the London Bike Kitchen, says ‘LBK feels like I am giving back to the community and I am very excited for what the future holds for it’.
