Barack Obama riding the waves of global optimism

The inauguration of Barack Obama as American president is being greeted with optimism by people all around the world.

The new president is expected to take a lead in helping reduce the West's huge contribution to global warming. Obama's African background and conciliatory tone towards the Arab world are seen as having the potential to reduce friction between his own country and those traditionally viewed as enemies of the United States.

LCC communications officer Mike Cavenett said, "Anyone concerned about the state of the world should welcome Obama's arrival in the White House. It's great to see pictures of him out and about on his bicycle. Let's hope he uses it to ride to the next global environment summit."
