Community-funded project helps Hackney estate residents on their bikes

STA bike mechanic giving the kids' bikes a check over

Evelyn Court estate in E8 has now launched 5 weeks of cycling, Dr Bikes and cycling advocacy for the local community.

Every Saturday from 12 to 3pm (until 19th June), anyone can come and sign up for cycle training then and there or to have their bikes checked out by a professional mechanic.
As demand is usually high, you can register in advance to make sure you get your place on the cycle training course and/or your slot with a mechanic to look at your bike.

The activities launched on 15th May and over 35 visitors received cycle training and a bike check. Many more came along to watch and to find out more about cycling in Hackney. A handful of instructors from STA Bikes were on hand to work with children and adults to improve their cycling skills and help new cyclists feel more confident to cycle on the road.

The Evelyn Court Association of Tenants, organiser of the event, is very pleased with the outcome and hopes to organise many more similar events in the future. Maggie Cooke, project leader, says:

‘This is a great opportunity for children and adults to experience cycling in a safe environment. We have got a fleet of bikes of different sizes so even if people don’t have their own bikes, they can come and take part.’

Plenty of cycling maps and other useful information is also available.
