How much to spend on your bike

Buying a bike now instead of later will save you money on other forms of transport. Even if you cannot afford your dream bike straight away, the money you save will allow you to buy a better bike at a later date.

As general rule, the more you spend on a bike the more enjoyable it will be to ride. More expensive bikes are usually lighter, faster and more durable. Bike prices range from £50 for a second-hand three-gear bike to £2,000 plus for a custom built racer or mountain bike with suspension. New bikes under £200 are often heavy.

Consider buying a good second-hand bike if you cannot afford a quality new one. It will probably be lighter and more fun than a £150 new bike even if it has a few scratches.
