LCC supports successful summer of grass track racing

Hackney Cycling Club, an organisation funded through LCC via the Community Cycling Fund, launched its first grass track league at Hackney Downs on Sunday 2 August 2009.

The successful launch party was attended by regular cyclists, local bike shops, and numberous residents and visitors.

Around 20 youngsters, parents and adult riders competed in the league throughout the day.

The second event, on Sunday 9 August, attracted 25 participants, with many others comign along others to voice their support.

Mags Reinig of the LCC community team said, "Everyone is invited to come along to watch or take part in the league.

"Entry is free and everyone, experienced and beginner, can join in. You can bring your own bike or hire one from the Cycle Club Hackney when you get there. The first races start at 4pm."

There are four kinds of racing:

  1. Time trials Different teams compete against one another, each attempting to cover a set distance quickest. Teams start at opposite ends of the track
  2. Roadie pursuits Visit the website for more details
  3. Scratch Individual riders start on equal terms trying to outrace each other
  4. Devil Contact for more details

Age categories are 8-11, 12-15, and 16 plus. Informal sessions can be organised for the under 8s but they need to be accompanied by an adult.

The winners will be taken to an induction session to track cycling at the Herne Hill Velodrome.

Information about cycling, cycle training, and road safety is available at each event. This is a pilot project but the club hopes to be able to repeat this in the coming years, and offer more frequent events.

A follow-up event is planned for 26th September in Mabley Green near Hackney Wick.
