Orthodox Jewish cycling in Hackney

Step by step

In 2009 Step by Step successfully applied to the Community Cycling Fund for London to purchase a range of specialist bikes. The organisation supports 3-13 year olds with special needs from the Orthodox Jewish Community in Hackney.

Many children with disabilities are denied the chance to exercise which can lead to sedentary lifestyles. This lack of access to physical activities is also a problem for some within the Orthodox Jewish Community.

To address this problem, Step by Step purchased an impressive fleet of recumbent style bikes that can be adapted to suit the rider's needs. With the help of expert advice from experienced cycle instructors, Step by Step is now offering a cycling club at Tyssen school where the kids can use these bikes.

Special needs cycling club

The funding received in 2009 paid for a cycle instructor to provide regular cycle training for the kids.

The project launched at the end of summer in 2009, and come rain or shine the children have been making the most of the bikes.

8 children at a time, with the support of volunteers and project workers, have been enjoying the half hour sessions in which they learn how to cycle and get the chance to be active.

32 children from the Step by Step project have taken part and 3 children who don’t usually attend the centre have joined in with the cycling.

Winter bike day

The project organised an open day in December for parents and families to come and see the bikes and their children cycling. The parents were very impressed with what had been achieved.

One mum said, 'This is an excellent way of exercising for my son. He is gaining awareness of cycling safely.'

And the children are even more excited:

'I love the thrill of riding the bike and the sense of achievement when I work hard and reach the finish point.'
