When you have weather as variable as we do in this country, it pays to keep a set of waterproofs close to hand all year round. But full-length, weather-beating trousers aren’t always necessary, which is where these taped-sealed shorts come in.

Available in regular and three-quarter length (£59.99), they’re made from waterproof fabrics that not only fend off road splash but have kept us dry in serious downpours. Stretchy panels around the seat and knees make them much more comfortable than we’d anticipated and the elasticated waist and leg adjusters help fine tune the fit if you’re adding extra layers or sealing out draughts.

The design is thankfully pretty minimal and there are just two water-resistant zippered pockets to keep your phone and wallet safe. We found them light and breathable enough for day rides too.
