Community cycling project secures additional funding

Merton Cycling Campaign and Pedal4Health have won a £10,000 Comic Relief grant after submitting a joint proposal to deliver children's cycle training in south London.

Pedal4Health is a group that was started using money from the LCC-administered Community Cycling Fund for London.

Fred Ellis, project leader, announced that the application had been successful at London’s Skyride on Sunday 20 September. Four of Pedal4Health’s accredited cycling instructors led 60 cyclists to central London to join the car-free event.

The £10,000 will be spread over two years to deliver children’s cycle training through the Pedal4Health project.

Fred Ellis says, "The Comic Relief grant is a perfect match for us. We always try to make our sessions enjoyable and fun."

The project had already been providing cycle training to people of all ages in South London, raising awareness of the health benefits.

Earlier in 2009, extra funding from Capital FM’s Help a London Child was secured. Pedal4Health also works closely with the NHS to deliver cycling sessions under the Bike4Life initiative.
