Record 3500 cyclists join LCC rides into Skyride

An estimated 3500 cyclists joined LCC's guided rides from the suburbs to the Mayor of London's Skyride event on Sunday 20 September 2009.

The 53 rides, with at least one from every borough, was double the number organised last year. The largest ride, from Greenwich, had over 400 riders.

The number of LCC guided rides helped bring record crowds on to the traffic-free city centre circuit, with overall numbers for the day estimated at 65,000.

There were also a large number of guided rides out of the city in the afternoon, encouraging less-experienced and family cyclists to take to the streets for the whole day.

LCC chief executive Koy Thomson said, "A big thanks to everyone who marshalled and volunteered at this year's event, helping to make it the most successful ever. We're proud that this is an event that was started by LCC, and one that we continue to play a large role in.

"Skyride just goes to show that if you make the streets cycle-friendly, people will come out in their thousands. It's fantastic to see so many families and novice cyclists enjoying London's streets."

Chance to sign our Superhighways manifesto
There was a constant stream of visitors to the LCC stall on the Mall, where free maps and other information was available, including details of our Superhighways manifesto.

Cycling celebrities such as model Kelly Brook and Olympic gold-medal winner Chris Hoy helped raise the profile of the event.
