Space for Cycling campaign wins prestigious award
For the second year in a row an LCC campaign has triumphed in the prestigious London Transport Awards.
Space for Cycling, LCC's campaign to secure cycling improvements in every one of London's 629 council wards, was victorious in the Transport Information and Marketing category, one of the few award categories open to all comers. In shortlisting Space for cycling the judges noted how the campaign's supporters messaged 7000 local election candidates and secured support from more than 50% of them. Post-election more than 43% (now up to 46%) of elected councillors backed Space for Cycling and 14 councils had a majority of councillors who were backers.
LCC thanks all those who supported and worked for the campaign and emphasises that the award is a tribute to the joint efforts of its supporters. As we all know the work is far from over and we have to continue to lobby local councils to ensure that the commitments they made during the Space for Cycling camapign are realised. In the latest issue of London Cyclist magazine there is a petition form on which we are gathering signatures that will be presented to local council leaders - you can also find the petition on the web at space4cycling.org.
Other winners of London Transport awards included: Ealing Council for their Cycle Safety Shield programme to make lorries safer (in the Road safety, traffic management and enforcement category; Lambeth Council won the Excellence in cycling and walking award for Clapham Old Town; and Ealing took another for their Biking schools programme (Contribution to sustainable transport category).
