Take action to save axed police lorry-safety experts

LCC is calling on cyclists to urge their local MP to support an Early Day Motion to halt the disbanding of London's specialist lorry-safety police unit.

The mayor was strongly criticised for his decision to disband the Commercial Vehicle Education Unit (CVEU), run by the Metropolitan Police.

This decision comes in a year when 8 of the 10 cyclist fatalities in London have involved lorries.

Hackney North MP Diane Abbott tabled an Early Day Motion calling on Boris Johnson to reverse the decision to close the unit, which under current plans will cease operating in March 2010.

70% of lorries examined by the unit since its inception have been found to be breaking the law.

MPs can sign it to show their support for the scheme, and LCC is urging all cyclists to contact their MP and ask them to sign the motion.
