Women's ride puts 'Birds on Bikes'

Over 200 cyclists lit up Horse Guards Parade during the first LCC 'Birds on Bikes' night ride

Saturday 7 March 2009 saw LCC's first 'Birds on Bikes' night ride, celebrating International Women's Day.

Over two hundred riders of both sexes took part in the event, following a ten-mile route around central London, passing locations marking the achievements of women in the capital and lighting up the city with an explosion of lights, costumes and sounds.

To view or add photos of the event, visit the LCC Flickr pages (link on the right). We'll be adding ours this week, so make sure you bookmark the page and upload any pictures you have.

LCC handed out free food and drink at the post-ride party at Dragon Hall in Covent Garden, while cycle fashion label Cyclodelic lit up the walls with a presentation on its clothing brand dedicated to making women look fantastic (in TopShop this spring).

There are still some great Birds on Bikes t-shirts for sale (£10). Call LCC on 020 7234 9310 for details.

Bikes were dressed to impress
The Glow Company (see the link on the right) provided glow sticks for all the riders.

Event organiser Alison Waller said, "We're really pleased so many people turned up, and so many made such an effort. Some of the costumes were fantastic, and those bikes draped in fairy lights looked amazing."

"Loads of women came along, and lots of guys to offer their support too. It was a great ride, so thanks to everyone who took part, especially the volunteers who helped us out. And don't forget to look out for details of the next ride..."

Amy from ExtremeEast radio came along, and produced an entertaining podcast. Follow the link on the right.
