We're calling on Islington Council to deliver protected cycle routes on all busy roads in the borough by 2026.
Write to your next council leader today - demand rapid and bold changes for people and planet.
2022’s council elections are a vital point in London’s zero-carbon journey. Motor vehicles are the largest and most stubborn source of London’s emissions, and borough councils control 95% of the city’s roads. We need all our councils to act in the next four years and be bold – or it’ll be too late to get to zero carbon roads by 2030. That’s what’s needed for London and Islington to do their bit. That’s why we’re calling on the council’s next leader to commit to cutting road transport emissions fast and enabling lots more walking, cycling and wheeling.
I believe that cycling is a beautiful way to navigate and connect with a city. Done safely, cycling is a climate friendly mode of transport that brings personal joy. Policies that support climate safe streets are a long-term solution to climate change. As a CSS Champion, I aim to learn about the barriers to sustainable transport for all and how I may play a role in the solution.

“Many of our members are keen cyclists and so these issues were already on our radar and included in our manifesto. For example, I’m a council leaseholder in a small studio flat with no space for a bike and I’m also not allowed to store my bike on the landing of my block. Secure cycle storage is too expensive and scarce in Islington – that’s why we’ve been campaigning on this for months.”

We support measures to make it safer and more accessible to walk, wheel and cycle. Low traffic neighbourhoods and quieter cycling routes, including segregated cycle routes are fundamental to making Islington fairer, safer and greener in the midst of a climate and public health emergency. We are committed to building on the LTNs and 3 segregated cycle routes installed in the past two years, creating liveable neighbourhoods across the borough including with people friendly pavements and more greening. We will work to make deliveries more sustainable including by providing last mile delivery hubs and continue to work to increase the sustainable modal share and to make cycle parking more affordable.
Every borough in London must take action now, to decarbonise London's roads by 2030. Tell your next council leader to commit to the necessary bold action in the next four years. Because if they're not acting now, by 2026 it'll be too late to catch up on the climate crisis!
