We're calling on Southwark to implement a bold and ambitious programme to turn the borough into a series of neighbourhoods that do not permit through traffic
2022-2026 is a vital stage in London’s zero-carbon journey. Motor vehicles are the largest and most stubborn source of London’s emissions, and borough councils control 95% of the city’s roads. We need all our councils to act in the next four years and be bold – or it’ll be too late to get to zero carbon roads by 2030. That’s what’s needed for London and Southwark to do their bit.
That’s why we developed specific, personalised asks for each London borough council in the 2022 council elections to cut road transport emissions fast and enable lots more walking, cycling and wheeling.

Pledged
Southwark Green Party wholeheartedly support the three asks from Southwark Cyclists. We extend our thanks to the many advocates for walking, cycling, wheeling and scooting who have been working so hard over many years to make Southwark streets safer and more pleasant so that we can all benefit from active travel, clean air and lower carbon bills. There is much more to do, and we pledge that Green councillors will continue this work at speed.
Did they pledge?
The floods in London we've seen in recent summers are a stark reminder that climate change is already with us. Our response must include an increase in active travel and a reduction in road traffic miles. Climate Safe Streets lead to more vibrant neighbourhoods, lower air pollution and noise, as well as more walking and cycling. That’s got to be a good thing.
