We're calling on Wandsworth Council to build permanent and protected cycle lanes on at least four major routes by 2026
Write to your next council leader today - demand rapid and bold changes for people and planet.
2022’s council elections are a vital point in London’s zero-carbon journey. Motor vehicles are the largest and most stubborn source of London’s emissions, and borough councils control 95% of the city’s roads. We need all our councils to act in the next four years and be bold – or it’ll be too late to get to zero carbon roads by 2030. That’s what’s needed for London and Wandsworth to do their bit. That’s why we’re calling on the council’s next leader to commit to cutting road transport emissions fast and enabling lots more walking, cycling and wheeling.
Our Climate Safe Streets Champions are campaigning to make a real difference in their boroughs on action on cycling and climate. They're taking the lead on this campaign to engage with candidates and the public to ensure climate is at the top of the agenda for this election.
Who's on board?
Pledged
“Yes, we commit.
To this end we are proposing a transport citizen’s assembly, we think that the transport strategy needs to get buy-in from all road and pavement users. We see over and over again one road pitted against another when traffic orders are proposed.
The problem is simply too much traffic and simply displacing traffic from one place to another achieves nothing but rancour.
Of course there are wider interconnected problems, so experts and an assembly chosen through sortition seems like a good way of actually tackling the problem. ”
-Glyn Goodwin – Co-ordinator Wandsworth Greens
Pledged
“Wandsworth Council must play its part in addressing the climate crisis and reducing air pollution. Helping residents to make more journeys by cycling, walking and wheeling will have a positive impact on emissions and deliver on climate, environmental and health goals. Wandsworth Liberal Democrats support LCC’s Climate Safe Streets plan and commit to campaigning for it in office. We will pursue this agenda in Town Hall, working closely with the LCC and other local groups to make it happen. We will also back the creation of a Clean Air & Climate Change Cabinet member to give these issues priority.”
-Sue Wixley – Vice Chair, Wandsworth Liberal Democrats
Statement provided
Wandsworth Labour will make cycling easier and safer by maintaining safe cycle routes. We will consult residents, ensuring that those who want to cycle are comfortable doing so on protected cycle lanes.
We’ll work alongside TfL to improve Wandsworth’s red-routes.
The School Streets programme has created safer, healthier and more pleasant schools and we will extend them wherever possible.
We pledge to assess one-way streets in Wandsworth and to consult residents and local groups on introducing further cycling contraflows.
We will double the number of bike hangars in Wandsworth and have status updates delivered by a dedicated staff member.
Statement provided
-We will maintain and implement safer, protected, cycling routes including consulting on delivering new routes
-We will work with TFL to make their red route network safer
-Following successful implementation of 20 school streets (3rdhighest in inner-London), we will roll out the next 6 in the coming weeks before inviting schools to apply for the next phase
-We are already implementing a programme of cycle contraflows on one-way streets starting with the highest priority which will continue
-Deployment of this year’s 100+ bike hangars is underway, and we will follow-up annually matching to demand across the borough.
We will consult on all schemes and subject to funding incorporate them in our Walking and Cycling Strategy. Additionally, our ambition is to work with the Met Police and TFL to enable local 20mph speed enforcement and deliver the re-design of the Wandsworth gyratory. Wandsworth Conservative Councillors believe these are key pledges for improved safety and Active Travel in Wandsworth.
Every borough in London must take action now, to decarbonise London's roads by 2030. Tell your next council leader to commit to the necessary bold action in the next four years. Because if they're not acting now, by 2026 it'll be too late to catch up on the climate crisis!
