London’s network of tunnels (for tubes, trains and sewerage) needs a huge number of ventilation shafts, but these are often considered to be a blot on the landscape. Over the years, an astonishing range of cover-ups have been attempted, and on this fun ride we’ll see ten of the finest examples.
We set off from Canada Water on a 20-mile route, visiting Burgess Park, Pimlico Tube Station, and Hyde Park, where we stop for a leisurely break by the Serpentine. After circling the park we head for the river, cycling from Westminster bridge to Waterloo bridge, before heading for the Strand. From there, we go to Paternoster Square, then Finsbury Circus and finally to see our last example at the Bank of England. From there, it’s down to London Bridge, where some riders will probably choose to catch a train, while the rest of us make a quick and easy return to Canada Water by way of Tooley Street and Jamaica Road. John S. leading. Aiming to be at London Bridge for 2pm and Canada Water at 2.30.
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.
