Longer Leisure Ride about 30 miles. Good fitness is required. Mostly paved surfaces. Suitable for all skill levels.
Meet from 9:50 am for a 10:00 am departure from Brook Green, beside the tennis courts. This ride is about 30 miles, mainly flat with some small hills. Mostly paved surfaces. We will be riding at a slow leisurely pace, approximately 8-10 m/h. Good fitness is required. On the way back we will cross north of the river via Greenwich Foot Tunnel. Please note that the lifts might not be working and you will have to carry your bike down and up some stairs.
First, we will go to the Greenwich Observatory before heading to NOW Gallery at North Greenwich Station. We will visit the exhibition Up in Smoke by the artists John Booth & CAN. You can read more about the exhibition and the artist here.
A surprise addition to this ride will be visiting A Slice of Reality and the lighthouse at Trinity Buoy Wharf.
A slice of Reality is a work of modern art by Richard Wilson sitting by (and commissioned for) the Millennium Dome on the north-western bank of the Greenwich Peninsula.
Longplayer can be heard in the lighthouse at Trinity Buoy Wharf, London, where it has been playing since it began. Longplayer is a one thousand year long musical composition. It began playing at midnight on the 31st of December 1999, and will continue to play without repetition until the last moment of 2999, at which point it will complete its cycle and begin again. Conceived and composed by Jem Finer, it was originally produced as an Artangel commission, and is now in the care of the Longplayer Trust.
We will stop for refreshments in Greenwich after visiting the gallery. We expect to start cycling back to Brook Green at about 2:30-3 pm. We expect to be back at Brook Green at about 5 pm.
