The ride starts Epsom Station using the train from Waterloo at 8.54am This is the Dorking train. Arrives Epsom at around 9.30am. I’ll be at Waterloo by 8.35 but we can meet on the train, look for the carriage where the bikes are. I think there will be more than one though so will head to the one at the further away end of the train
The ride heads across Epsom Downs, if it’s not too wet otherwise we’ll stay on main road on to Headley Common Road then down Box Hill. Yes down! This a new variation on our old route which had two ascents of Box Hill on it but we hardly ever descended it. So, I’ve tweaked the route a fair bit to ring in the changes. There’s plenty of much tougher climbs in the ride so don’t think you’ll miss it! Then a bit of urban riding through Dorking but soon back heading up to Coldharbour and Leith Hill. I’ve had to cut a couple of climbs from the route and we probably wont be stopping in Peaslake but will find an alternative refreshment stop. Then the last and probably toughest climb of the day, White Down. After that it’s a lovely rolling ride over Ranmore Common and a terrific rib rattling descent to Westhumble. Anyone who really missed climbing Box Hill could take the opportunity to do that now, and then head back to Epsom the way we came out whilst those of us who’ve had enough climbing can pick up the return train from Westhumble or Dorking
It’s a 30 mile hilly route 2500ft of ascent. I’m guessing with stops included and the fact that we wait for everyone on the hills and some of us are very slow on the ups (me mostly) we should allow at least 4 hours.
