Merton Summer Solstice Ride
We’re heading up to the terrace opposite The Roebuck in Richmond to watch the sun set over the Thames Valley and enjoy a bit of convivial company between ourselves and with colleagues from other LCC groups. We meet outside Wimbledon station (main entrance) from 7 for a 730 departure. We should be easy to spot as a gaggle of cyclists.
We head straight up Wimbledon Hill, through the Village and along Parkside to Tibbets Corner. Under the roundabout and across Putney Heath on the road till we get to the Danebury Estate, which we cut through to get to the Roehampton Gate of Richmond Park. Then we’re through the Park and out of Richmond Gate, which brings us pretty much to The Roebuck.
Sunset is around 9.15, so we’ll saddle up around 9.30 and get back to Wimbledon, more or less by the same route, for 10-10.15.
Given the amount of time on the road and the late finish, this probably isn’t one for families with young children. Sometimes we have a contingent wanting to head across the Common in either or both directions. If you want to use the Common on the way back you will need very good lights.
Keep your eye on the weather forecast. Bring clothes you think you’ll need for standing around in, then add a layer. The Roebuck is very happy to sell you food and drink, but you’re equally welcome to bring your own – the terrace is not connected with the pub.
