Final recce and rehearsal: Women’s Freedom Ride – After Dark!
What do we want? Freedom to ride! When do we want it? After dark!
This fun protest ride will ‘highlight’ that many parts of London’s official cycle network aren’t safe after dark, especially for women.
Final recce and rehearsal ride
This session will be a final opportunity to practice and test the techniques and plan for the Women’s Freedom Ride – After Dark!
It’s important to get as many marshals to this session as possible so we get a realistic sense of how it will go on the night. There are extra challenges with this ride which we need to consider and practice for, including: social safety, the impact on decision making and perception of lights of oncoming cycles and vehicles, the context of the time of the ride and the setting.
We’ll ride through the route, highlight the identified risks, rehearse the plan to control and mitigate them and the plan for crossing as a group and other factors. This will be led by the ride leader but to a degree there will be opportunity to feedback on the plans and help shape the plan.
In addition to the rehearsal ride there are two marshal training opportunities and a zoom call. It is not mandatory to attend the training if you have already received marshal training or if you have lots of experience. But it is mandatory to attend the zoom call and the rehearsal ride.
Bring:
– A road-worthy bike and lock
– Warm and waterproof clothes
– Lights with plenty of charge and/or backup lights
– You don’t need previous experience but you do need to be a confident and competent rider. As a minimum you should be able to ride comfortably one handed whilst also maneuvering obstacles, communicating and looking all-around
– You should have a calm and inclusive manner
– Hi-viz clothing and helmets are optional, but if you choose to wear a helmet it must be warn properly (we can advise about this)
