ABUS becomes official security partner of London Cycling Campaign

London Cycling Campaign and leading bicycle security firm ABUS are partnering to tackle bike theft in London.

Theft represents a critical barrier to the Mayor’s aim of increasing cycle trips by a third by 2030.

Every year 18,500 bike thefts are reported to the police in London of which less than 1% result in a charge or a caution. Many people who have a bike stolen do not report the crime, and so London’s real bike theft figure is estimated to be nearer 70,000 per year.

6 in 10 people who have a bike stolen cycle less often, or stop cycling altogether.

As the official security partner of London Cycling Campaign, ABUS is providing insight and data to LCC’s ongoing Europe-wide research on best practice to deter cycle theft. LCC has been campaigning for better prevention and enforcement of bike theft for decades.

Competition

To celebrate the partnership, LCC is giving away two GRANIT™ Super Extreme 2500 bike locks, RRP £270 each, one on Instagram and one on X. To enter, share the partnership on Instagram or X before 11pm Sunday 16 June 2024. T&Cs below.

What we want

LCC is calling for faster progress on measures to tackle cycle theft:

  • Secure home cycle parking. More than 3000 secure cycle hangars (each with space for six bikes) have been installed on London streets so far and the Mayor has committed to delivering a further 2000.
  • More safe on-street cycle parking. LCC wants the Mayor to deliver the 36,000 on-street cycle parking spaces (2 spaces per hoop-type bike stand) that his Cycle Parking Implementation Plan says are needed “immediately”.

Peter Romanov, Managing Director of ABUS UK Ltd says:

“London isn’t just the capital of the UK, it is also sadly the capital of UK cycle crime. By joining forces with London Cycling Campaign, ABUS hopes to help support the continued growth of cycling in London and work to reduce bicycle theft – a win-win situation for the whole city.”

Tom Fyans, Chief Executive of London Cycling Campaign says:

“Cycle theft and fear of theft stop people cycling which undermines the work of both LCC and the London mayor to promote cycle use and reduce car dependency. Working with a leading lock maker like ABUS will enable LCC to develop anti-theft strategies, improve enforcement and assist cycle owners in protecting their property.”

Competition T&Cs: The competition is open to UK residents only, aged 13+. The closing date is 11pm Sunday 16 June 2024, and the winners will be chosen at random and messaged directly by us before 5pm on 17 June. One lock will be given to someone who has entered on Instagram and one lock will be given to someone who has entered on X. Winners must be contactable in order for us to post you your prize.
