Bank Junction is under threat with taxis coming back, a low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) consultation is now live, a new cycleway between Aldgate and Blackfriars is proposed, and changes are coming to Monument Junction, but what will they do for cycling? Lots is happening in the City of London so read on. If you’d like to stay up to date with what’s happening in the City, subscribe to our City of London newsletter list.

Aldgate to Blackfriars City Cycleway

The City is consulting on a new cycleway from Aldgate to Blackfriars, via Cornhill, Bank and Queen Victoria Street. This will include a protected, bi-direction cycle lane on the north side of Queen Victoria Street.

The consultation is split into two, one covering Queen Victoria Street and Aldgate, and another covering Leadenhall Street. Both close on 9 February 2025.

We support these changes but unfortunately there are no current plans for a safe connection to other routes at each end of the cycleway, forcing people to navigate dangerous junctions or ignore the route altogether, but we’re calling for this to be included with these changes and suggest you do, too.

Bunhill, Barbican and Golden Lane Healthy Neighbourhood Plan

The City of London and Islington councils are working together to propose a new Healthy Neighbourhood in the Barbican area of the city. The consultation has just closed on these proposals that will lower traffic volumes and lead to safer conditions for cycling on two important routes through the city.

The end result of all these changes will hopefully be a proper low traffic neighbourhood in the City of London with substantially reduced traffic volumes in the Beech Street tunnel and along Chiswell Street and an end to rat-running in Golden Lane, Bunhill Row and Moor Lane.

Monument Junction

Monument Junction is a daunting place to navigate for people walking, wheeling and cycling and is currently London’s 3rd most dangerous junction for pedestrians according to our Dangerous Junctions map. It currently lacks pedestrian crossing signals on some arms of the junction and despite timed motor vehicle restrictions on both London Bridge and Bishopsgate, is a massive danger for people cycling through the area.

TfL is planning improvements to the junction to make it safer and a consultation will be launching soon in 2025 but we’re yet to see what it’ll do for cycling. Again, details of the consultation will be shared on the City of London newsletter.

Bank under threat

The City of London transformed Bank Junction when they delivered the All Change at Bank scheme, restricting traffic at peak times to only people cycling and buses. The safety gains previously won by LCC will now be reversed with the City of London voting to allow taxis back to cut-through.

Read more about the proposed changes. We’ve fought the new decision and we’ll continue to fight it, with your help. The trial will be implemented in the spring and we will be campaigning to keep Bank safe. We’ll be sharing how you can help on the City of London newsletter.
