2022-2026 is a vital stage in London’s zero-carbon journey. Motor vehicles are the largest and most stubborn source of London’s emissions, and borough councils control 95% of the city’s roads. We need all our councils to act in the next four years and be bold – or it’ll be too late to get to zero carbon roads by 2030. That’s what’s needed for London and Redbridge to do their bit.
That’s why we developed specific, personalised asks for each London borough council in the 2022 council elections to cut road transport emissions fast and enable lots more walking, cycling and wheeling.

Every borough in London must take action now, to decarbonise London's roads by 2030. Get involved with campaigning in Redbridge now. Because if they're not acting now, by 2026 it'll be too late to catch up on the climate crisis!
ASK 1. A borough that's safe
We're calling on Redbridge Council to finish all TfL’s Strategic Cycling Analysis routes to LTN 1/20 standard by 2025; provide pedestrian signals at all signalised junctions without them; improve at least the five most dangerous junctions by 2025, and complete the borough-wide 20mph speed limit by 2023.
ASK 2. Child Friendly
We're calling on Redbridge Council to install school streets on 50% and consult on 100% for Redbridge's schools by December 2023.
ASK 3. People Friendly and Healthy
We're calling for 75% coverage of residential areas highlighted in TfL's Strategic Neighbourhood Analysis to be Low-traffic Neighbourhoods/People Friendly Streets/Low Emission Neighbourhood by 2026.
ASK 4. Accessible
We're calling for rapid rollout of shared mobility points, ie on-street hubs for e-car/e-van and e-bike share.
ASK 5. Secure and Inclusive
We're calling for cycle parking at transport interchanges, town centres, amenities, and in residential streets, so it is never cheaper or easier in the borough to park a car than it is a cycle
Provided statement
We will be releasing our vision and strategy for a sustainable transport strategy this year, outlining our commitment to promoting active travel such as cycling and walking in the borough which may be of interest to you and the RCC. As a keen cyclist myself, I want to see more people have greater access to cycling (whether that’s through cycle storage schemes or improved cycle lanes) and feel safe about cycling around our borough.

“We support less journeys by car and want to see the infrastructure to support this.
We fully support action to make our streets safer, more child friendly and more people friendly. In relation to low traffic neighbourhoods, we condemned the way that was introduced in one part of the Borough because the failure to consult with residents. Points 4 and 5 of your campaign are both desirable and achievable.
We support the need to monitor air quality and improve it in many parts of the Borough. Insufficient monitoring takes place, and this is something we want to change.”

As a paediatrician I am very worried about the direct effects of air pollution and inactivity on child health, and the effects of rapid climate heating on nature and our children’s future. Active travel can help us with both problems but requires safe streets. We need Redbridge and Transport for London to collaborate to deliver the structural changes needed.
