URBAN HILL CLIMB, SWAIN’S LANE, N6, SATURDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2023 – Racing from midday

Ride up the infamous Swain’s Lane in the heart of North London on closed roads. The only hill climb within Greater London and an iconic event on the UK circuit.

The climb averages 8% and maxes out at 20% over 700m of tarmac, making it one of the only places within Central London for hill climb specialists to test their mettle.

Racers, families, Bromptons and cargo bikes all shoulder to shoulder battling up the 20% gradients. Whether you’re racing, riding for fun or simply spectating, this is an event with an incredible atmosphere and a great day out for all.

Secure your place!

Can I cycle up the hill with my child / children / dog(s ) / cats(s) / fancy dress / loudspeaker(s) / basket / panniers / trike / recumbent / child seat / shopping?

Yes!

Can I come to watch?

Yes, you’re absolutely welcome to come cheer on the riders and soak up the action. There’s food and drink and a great atmosphere. Cowbells at the ready!

I’m not sure about taking part?

Whether you’re riding for your best time or just in it for fun, everyone is welcome at Urban Hill Climb – it’s the taking part that counts and we’d encourage everyone who wants to, to have a go. If you have any concerns or questions at all please get in touch at urbanhillclimb@lcc.org.uk

What facilities will be available?

Urban Hill Climb takes place on Swain’s Lane in Hampstead. The road will be closed but the event is outside on a public road so facilities are limited.

There will be food vendors, coffee and drinks available; portable toilets at the bottom of Swain’s lane, and a first aid team just in case of any accidents and emergencies. Water will be provided for riders at the top of the climb.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Yes, helmets are compulsory for all participants. It’s a requirement of our events insurance.

What is your policy for under-18s?

All under-18s participating or spectating must be accompanied by an adult. This is a family friendly event but there are risks associated which will be addressed and mitigated by LCC. Staff, volunteers and marshals will be on hand to assist in the event of lost or distressed children or vulnerable persons

Our stance on trans and non-binary inclusion

This is the third time LCC has run Urban Hill Climb and this year we continue to have categories for men and women grouped by age. We encourage everyone who wants to, however they identify, to take part. We leave selecting a category to the judgement of each individual and have no wish or ability to police entries. We hope everyone is happy to participate on this basis.

We recognise that non-binary people may still feel that there are barriers to participating. LCC is striving to be an inclusive organisation and we will be reviewing how to improve Urban Hill Climb further in future. We welcome feedback and will provide opportunities for people to give their views after the event.
