Lewisham Cyclists Shorter Kent Ride – Shoreham & Pilgrims
This is a short route in Kent, taking in the lovely undulating lanes below the North Downs and returning via Downe. Largely on narrow lanes, with a short stretch of wide A road at the start off which we will have to (carefully) turn right. The ride goes from Eynsford to Hayes the long way round, starting and finishing with a train journey. The meeting point for the start is on the 0940 train from Catford towards Sevenoaks, getting off at Eynsford. This is just outside the oyster zone, so a small supplementary fare will have to be bought. Home from Hayes (zone 6) to Catford Bridge, Ladywell or Lewisham. The train gets to Eynsford at 10.11 for people who want to join the train further south. The ride ends at Hayes, but people are welcome to ride home if they want. There are 2 good cafes part way along the route and one at Hayes, and a coffee stop is planned. With about 2 1/2 hours of cycling time, and time for refreshments, we should reach Hayes between 1 and 2pm, with 4 trains an hour home. The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted the one big hill up from Pilgrims way (Hogtrough). I would expect many riders to get off and push until the gradient eases, the hill is sharp but short. Tigresses and tigers can ride up and down doing laps of the hill until the rest of us catch up, but will be asked to await the group at the top.
